A vulnerability has been discovered in the WhatsApp messenger, according to the New York Post. It allows owners of Android devices to view messages and media files deleted by the other party using third-party WAMR software. While the app is currently only available for Android, it also tracks messages from iPhone.
The service can monitor other popular messengers. Once installed on a smartphone, WAMR detects all messaging services installed on the smartphone and prompts the user to select the one they are interested in.
After that, the application starts to monitor notifications from the selected services. If WAMR notices that the other party has deleted an audio or text message, it will offer to view its contents.
In addition, WAMR can carry hidden dangers. According to the publication, the application requires too many permissions to work. This means that this utility can be used to steal data from other applications installed on the device.
At the time of writing, the app is still available on Google Play and has been downloaded over 50 million times.
